Red flags when hiring a contractor (including shared-lead pressure)
Pressure tactics, vague contracts, and marketplace behaviors that put homeowners at risk.
Pressure to decide today
Urgency is sometimes real (storm damage). Constant “today only” pricing after a marketplace lead is often inventory pressure from a shared lead the pro already paid for.
No license, no insurance proof, cash only
Ask for documentation. Reputable companies expect it. Cash-only full prepay is a classic risk.
They won’t say how they got your number
Transparent operators explain referrals, website, or ads. Evasive answers about “a lead service” can mean you’re one of several buyers of the same lead.
Vague scope
If materials, timelines, and change-order rules aren’t written, disputes are likely. Photos and a clear work order protect both sides.

“The red flag for me was three different companies using the same rushed script. Felt like a call center, not craftsmen.”
